Encaustics
What is Encaustic?
Encaustic art is a painting technique where colour pigments are mixed with a melted beeswax medium and applied to a rigid surface, usually wood. Layers are fused using a variety of heat tools, e.g. blow torch, iron, heat gun. Wax can be built up and worked in relief or carved, scratched and scraped away to reveal the layers below. This technique results in a depth and luminous translucancy that is unique to encaustic art.
